Our fourth day in Edinburgh was one for the books — full of history, mystery, and unforgettable entertainment! From ancient castles to hidden streets and a spectacular night of military pageantry, it was a day that perfectly captured the spirit of Scotland.

☕ Morning at Milkmaid

We started our morning at Milkmaid, a cozy café near the city center. Unfortunately, they didn’t have any gluten-free options that day, so I settled for a simple cup of coffee and enjoyed a quiet moment people-watching before our busy schedule ahead.

🏰 Exploring Edinburgh Castle

Next, we joined our Viator Tour of Edinburgh Castle, and I cannot stress this enough — give yourself plenty of timeto explore! The castle is massive and filled with fascinating buildings and exhibits that deserve to be seen at your own pace.

You’ll find historic structures like the Crown Jewels Exhibition, St. Margaret’s Chapel (the oldest building in Edinburgh), the Great Hall, the Scottish National War Memorial, and breathtaking views over the city from the castle walls.

Having a tour guide made all the difference. Not only did our guide share incredible stories and legends about the castle’s past, but as part of a tour group, we also skipped the long entrance line — a huge plus during the busy summer season.

If you plan to visit, wear comfortable shoes, bring your camera, and plan at least 2–3 hours to fully experience this iconic landmark.

🕯️ The Real Mary King’s Close

After the castle, we took a guided tour through The Real Mary King’s Close, one of Edinburgh’s most intriguing historical attractions. Hidden beneath the Royal Mile, this underground network of streets and rooms reveals what life was like for the people who lived there centuries ago.

Photography isn’t allowed inside (you’ll want to soak up the eerie atmosphere in person anyway), but the storytelling is so vivid you’ll feel transported back in time. The tour guides are actors who bring history to life with humor and a touch of spookiness — it’s an absolute must-do when visiting Edinburgh!

🍽️ Dinner at Badger & Co.

After a full day of exploring, we were ready for a good meal — and Badger & Co. delivered in every way. They offer excellent gluten-free options, attentive service, and a warm, inviting atmosphere. From starters to desserts, everything was delicious. I highly recommend booking a table in advance, as it’s a popular spot with both locals and visitors.

🎆 The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo

We ended our evening at the world-famous Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, held right outside the castle. This event is an absolute must-book experience if you’re visiting during August. The show combines the precision and pageantry of the British Military with international performances, bagpipes, and breathtaking lighting and sound displays that create an emotional, unforgettable atmosphere.

One tip from experience — choose your seats wisely. We sat in the Grand Stand, which provided a panoramic view, but the performers felt a bit too far away. If you can, try sitting closer to the castle entrance for a more immersive experience and better visibility of the intricate formations and musicians.

Day 4 in Edinburgh blended history, heritage, and heart-stirring entertainment in the most beautiful way. Whether you’re gluten-free, over 60, or simply a curious traveler, this city offers something for everyone.
