Chasing Jamie Fraser Outlander Adventures & Gluten Free Travel Over 60

Day 3: All Things Outlander – Chasing Jamie Fraser in Scotland

Welcome back to my Traveling Gluten Free & Over 60 in Scotland series! This is Day 2 of our eight-day adventure through Edinburgh and Inverness, exploring the sights, food, and culture of this beautiful country. Traveling gluten free and over 60 comes with its own set of lessons, laughs, and surprises—and each day brings a new story to share.

If you missed Day 1, we arrived from Orlando, Florida, explored Edinburgh on foot (19,032 steps to be exact!), and discovered what it’s really like to travel gluten free overseas. Today, we dive into a dream come true for any Outlanderfan—exploring the real-life filming locations of the beloved series while soaking up Scotland’s history and charm.

Outlander Highlights

If you’re an Outlander fan, you’ll understand why Day 2 was pure magic. I often joke that I came to Scotland to find my Highlander husband—somewhere out there, I’m sure Jamie Fraser is waiting!

We booked the Rabbie’s Outlander Adventure Tour, a small-group experience that took us through some of the most iconic filming locations from the show. It was the perfect way to see the countryside without worrying about driving on the opposite side of the road or navigating Scotland’s narrow streets.

Our journey began at Midhope Castle, better known to fans as Lallybroch, Jamie Fraser’s family home. Standing there felt surreal—like stepping through time.

Next, we explored Blackness Castle, used as Fort William in the series, followed by Linlithgow Palace, the filming site for Wentworth Prison and the real-life birthplace of Mary Queen of Scots.

Our guide shared fascinating stories all along the way, from how to “salt haggis” the traditional Scottish way to the haunting tale of Geillis Duncan, accused of witchcraft in the 16th century.

We continued on to Culross, a beautifully preserved village that stood in for Cranesmuir, and then ended our tour at Doune Castle, known to fans as Castle Leoch, home to Clan MacKenzie. Every stop brought a mix of history, beauty, and a bit of TV magic.

A Sweet Stop with Paddington

On our way back to Edinburgh, we made a quick stop at St. Andrew Square Garden, where a charming Paddington Bear statue stands proudly on display. It was the perfect lighthearted moment to end a day filled with castles and Outlander history.

Gluten-Free Dining

For lunch, we stopped at 1807 in Linlithgow, a charming café with lots of gluten-free options. The carrot and sweet potato soup was warm and flavorful, but my cold sandwich wasn’t very good, and service was slow, so we had to order our food to go to make it to Linlithgow Palace before closing.

Dinner was at Howies in Edinburgh, a cozy Scottish restaurant that quickly became a favorite. They offered a wonderful gluten-free menu featuring fresh, local ingredients and warm hospitality. If you’re gluten-free, this is a must-try—just be sure to make reservations in advance, as it’s a popular spot!

Evening in Edinburgh

After dinner, we set out for a relaxing evening walk—but a wrong turn led us straight into The Old Town Pub Company, and what a fun surprise that was! It’s truly the one-stop shop for everything fun in Edinburgh, with 15 unique venues ranging from traditional pubs to underground nightclubs—all right in the heart of Edinburgh’s Old Town. Even if nightlife isn’t your main goal, the energy, laughter, and live music made it worth exploring.

Captured with my GoPro Hero 12 & Hover Air X1Pro, Day 2 was filled with castles, culture, laughter, and a touch of Outlander magic. Traveling gluten free and over 60 doesn’t mean slowing down—it means savoring every experience, one Scottish adventure at a time.

Stay tuned for Day 3, where we continue exploring Edinburgh’s charm, local flavor, and more gluten-free finds!
